Everyone should have a will

Lots of solicitors will provide a fancy and usually very long form for you to fill in. We do not do that. In order for us to be able to discuss your proposed will with you we need you to think about the following three questions.

1. What do I own?

Write a list under three headings and put in details as below example

Item                              Value                             Owner

My house                    £250000                        Me and my wife/husband

My car                          £10000                          Me

etc

This will allow us to see if any Inheritance Tax is likely to be payable. This can be a complex subject.

2.Who do I want to be my executors?

These are the people who sort out your affairs. If you leave everything to your spouse, you can appoint him or her. Otherwise, you need two sensible people over 18.

3. What do I want to do with my stuff?

Your executors will collect in your assets, pay your debts first and then pass the assets to the people you specify in your will

As a starter, that's all you need to do. Bring your list of assets with you when you come to see us.
